Cosmos[ATOM]
Cosmos is an ecosystem of independent parallel chains and tools for creating interoperable blockchains.
In 2014, computer scientist Jae Kwon developed Tendermint, an open-source blockchain launching software. The Cosmos network was launched through the Interchain Foundation (ICF) support with the core of the Tendermint consensus algorithm.
Cosmos blockchain was developed to enable communication between distributed blockchains without relying on a centralized server. Its whitepaper was published in 2016, and the network was soon called the Internet of Blockchains by its founders.
Cosmos network functions using BFT consensus algorithms along with Tendermint consensus, which powers each blockchain in the Cosmos. Tendermint BFT is a proof-of-stake (PoS) consensus algorithm that powers Cosmos SDK (software development kit) and Cosmos Hub. BFT (Byzantine fault tolerance) is a consensus algorithm of a distributed network that reaches consensus even when some of the network’s nodes fail to respond.
