[PEOPLE]

ConstitutionDAO was a decentralized group that sought to buy a copy of the U.S. Constitution using PEOPLE tokens for governance.

ConstitutionDAO (PEOPLE) was a decentralized autonomous organization formed in November 2021 with the goal of collectively purchasing a rare original copy of the U.S. Constitution at a Sotheby’s auction. The DAO successfully raised approximately $47 million in Ethereum from nearly 17,500 contributors worldwide within a week, demonstrating the power of blockchain-based crowdfunding and community governance. Despite the significant fundraising, ConstitutionDAO was ultimately outbid by billionaire Ken Griffin, who won the auction with a $43.2 million bid.

The PEOPLE token functioned as a proof-of-donation and governance token, granting holders voting rights on decisions related to the management and potential display of the Constitution copy. After losing the auction, the DAO offered refunds to contributors, although Ethereum transaction fees meant refunds were slightly less than initial contributions. The project was wound down shortly afterward, with the PEOPLE token retaining no formal governance or utility beyond its role as a memento of the community effort. The token continues to trade on decentralized exchanges, serving as a cultural artifact of this historic decentralized crowdfunding experiment.
