Ostium Defaults on $15M Loan, Heads to Court

Ostium defaulted on a roughly $15M crypto loan from a Hong Kong lender, and a New York federal court has now set a hearing in the escalating dispute.

The loan's assignee, ESS Frontier LLC, sued in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York (case 1:26-cv-07645) and secured a temporary restraining order freezing Ostium's assets while it pushes the claim into arbitration. The default follows a July oracle exploit that drained about $23.75M from the onchain perpetuals exchange, which is also under CFTC scrutiny in the wake of the hack.

The fight puts a spotlight on how offchain lenders enforce claims against onchain protocols, testing whether US courts can freeze and recover crypto assets tied up in a DeFi platform after an exploit.
