Anthropic Sets Up Biology Lab to Expand AI Drug Research

Anthropic has quietly established a wet lab in the San Francisco Bay Area, moving beyond purely computational research as it expands its AI-driven life sciences program. The company says the lab will combine in-house biological experiments with work conducted by external partners.

Anthropic aims to use Claude and robotic systems to automate parts of laboratory work, while keeping human oversight in place for safety. The company is also developing tools for drug research and has acquired biotech startup Coefficient Bio, while collaborating with pharmaceutical firms including Genentech, Bristol Myers Squibb and Novo Nordisk.

The company is targeting areas that could benefit from faster preclinical research, including diseases that have historically been considered difficult or uneconomical to treat. Anthropic says it will not run clinical trials for now, keeping that part of the drug development process with pharma and biotech partners.
