Qtum is a hybrid blockchain platform established in 2016 to address the limitations of Bitcoin and Ethereum, the prominent blockchain networks. Bitcoin lacks support for smart contracts and DApps, while Ethereum faces challenges with its account-based balance recording system.

Ethereum utilizes an account model for balance tracking, whereas Bitcoin and other major blockchains employ the Unspent Transaction Output (UTXO) model. Although Ethereum's account model is considered more user-friendly, concerns persist regarding its security and scalability compared to Bitcoin's UTXO model. By utilizing this approach, Qtum aims to provide a secure and scalable blockchain platform capable of supporting smart contracts and DApps.
