Chainlink is a largest decentralized blockchain oracle that enables smart contracts to communicate with real-world data. 

Chainlink (LINK) is a decentralized network of nodes designed to facilitate the connection of off-chain data and information to on-chain smart contracts. This system enhances the capabilities of smart contracts by enabling access to real-world data and off-chain computing while maintaining the security of blockchain technology.

Smart contracts function as protocols on the blockchain, similar to traditional contracts, but with the benefit of immutability and verifiability. As a result, they foster a high level of trust among stakeholders that the terms of the agreement will be executed if and only if the conditions are met. However, implementing smart contracts for real-world applications is challenging because most data and services are not on the blockchain. Since smart contracts need off-chain data in an on-chain format to function, the challenge lies in bridging the gap between outside information and blockchain smart contracts in a language that both parties can understand.

Chainlink addresses this challenge by linking off-chain and on-chain data through middleware software called oracles. These oracles act as intermediaries, translating data from the real world to smart contracts on the blockchain and vice versa. Chainlink aims to provide a secure and decentralized "blockchain-middleware" that is tamper-proof, and an easy way to access the numerous inputs and outputs needed for complex smart contracts. The platform aims to accelerate the development of valuable smart contracts by providing simple and secure access to essential off-chain resources.
