Harmony to Sunset Its Layer 1 and Migrate ONE to Ethereum
Harmony has proposed shutting down its Layer 1 network and airdropping new ONE tokens to holders on Ethereum, ending one of the earlier sharded proof-of-stake chains. Balance will be snapshotted at the final block, with new ONE issued 1:1 on Ethereum and no claim required.
The proposal follows an August exploit in which an attacker minted trillions of unauthorized ONE, months after the roughly $100M Horizon bridge hack in 2022. Harmony framed the decision bluntly, saying the threats posed by state actors and AI agents are too great to keep operating a standalone chain. Validators can begin ceasing node operations on September 10, and those who sunset on time, keep their stake and serve as governors will share a one-time $1.372M compensation pool paid in four quarterly instalments.
Emissions that once secured the chain will instead fund a new AI video remix project, where a small group of creators publish prompts and assets that fans can fork while AI agents turn each branch into more clips.
