Cronos Halts Chain After $75M Tectonic Exploit
Cronos halted its entire network after identifying an exploit in Tectonic, its largest lending protocol, with on-chain analysts putting the total drain at roughly $75M.
The Cronos team stopped block production to prevent the attacker from moving the stolen funds, and the exploiter's addresses have been blacklisted, leaving the assets stranded on Cronos with no way to bridge them out while validators prepare a network fix. Researcher William Li (hklst4r) traced the loss across several attacker-controlled wallets, including one holding about $8M, to reach the ~$75M estimate. Tectonic is a Cronos-native money market, and lending protocols that rely on external price feeds and shared collateral pools remain among DeFi's most frequently drained primitives.
A full base-layer halt of this size is rare, and it hands Cronos a narrow window to freeze and potentially recover funds before any restart. No timeline for resuming the chain has been given.
