Binance hack leaves ETH reserves near 94% of customer balances

Binance 14, the hot wallet at the center of Thursday's suspected hack, is listed in the exchange's October 1 proof of reserves as backing customer balances. At the time it held 1.26B USDT and 89,475 ETH among 37 assets.

The attacker used EIP-7702 to turn the wallet into a sweeper that forwarded incoming funds to their own address. About 167,464 ETH left Binance 14, followed by 28,005.6 ETH from Binance 16.

Roughly 204,500 ETH taken equals about 5.6% of Binance's ETH reserves, leaving ether backing near 94% after an exact 100% ratio on October 1.

USDC and several altcoins, including ENA, UNI, PEPE and AAVE, are also likely below full backing until the stolen assets are replaced. Binance says customer balances will be honored, its SAFU fund holds around $1B in bitcoin, and the November 1 reserve snapshot will show whether the gap has been closed.
