Arthur Hayes: “Safety First” Could Drive More Liquidity Into Crypto
Arthur Hayes argues that the recent “Safety First” narrative from major US AI labs could have significant implications for credit markets and global liquidity. In his latest essay, Hayes claims that weaker AI compute demand could pressure the debt financing behind data centers, private credit and captive insurance structures.
• AI labs currently support over $1T of investment-grade debt and hundreds of billions in lower-quality debt and loans
• Hayes cites an estimated $1.54T in captive reinsurance assets, based on research from Nick Nameth
• US banks have created over $100B of additional money since August 14
• Hayes expects continued monetary expansion to support Bitcoin and selected crypto assets
Hayes outlines two potential responses if AI compute demand falls: the US government could become a buyer of compute through long-term offtake agreements, or financial authorities could provide liquidity if AI-related debt begins impairing insurance-sector balance sheets. He argues that either path could ultimately increase the amount of money circulating in the financial system.
His broader thesis is that the combination of AI infrastructure debt, private credit exposure and potential government support creates a setup where additional liquidity could eventually flow into risk assets.
Hayes concludes that the current choppy crypto market could give way to higher Bitcoin and selected altcoin prices if dollar liquidity continues expanding.
