Absolutely! friends and family call me Benje, born and raised in morocco, and made in different parts of the world, and in terms of work if you're interested, I take care of the Blockchain ecosystem - Onboarding Blockchain protocols and dApps to use our decentralized cloud - really exciting stuff!

Q2: Can you introduce Threefold to us?

The idea is to provide a decentralized foundation of the internet. Today, everything runs on huge, centralized providers like AWS. 1. Since Edward Snowden told the world, we know that these providers abuse their power to facilitate espionage and theft of data. 2. These providers have shown that they are ready to shut down and censor services, like in the cast of Parler. 3. Sometimes these datacenters face outages or burn down completely. This just happened a few months ago in France.

so in a nutshell! we built the largest decentralized cloud, comprised of decentralized storage, compute, and networking - a full blown cloud that is totally peer-to-peer, powered by people. we enable any web2 or web3 app ( Blockchain-base, such as DeFi, NFT apps etc..)literally any kind of linux app, ( or any containerized app) to utilize our decentralized cloud capacity and escape the monopolies of cloud providers

ThreeFold is a movement of people that want to bring the internet back to it's original purpose: by people for people. To make that work we have a stack of technology that allows you to create compute and storage generators (like solar panels) for compute. All of this is tied together where the capacity generators create tokens ("proof of capcity") and these token are the means to consume the capacity.

We are 100% backwards compatible with all standard IT solution s and want to bring this forward to present decentralised capacity next to the centralised (and dominant clouds)

We're very close to become a alternative platform for many layer-1 blockchain protocols - allowing them to escape the large datacenters and monopolists.
From the technical perspective: approx 1000 nodes out there, 14k CPU cores, and 80PetaByte os storage capacity.

ThreeFold is a big project with 65 team members total, building over 4 years. Our founding team is building cloud since the 90s, coming from 5 exits. All that experience is going into the ThreeFold movement and the associated technology.

in terms of milestones from a partner perspective - we have built one of the largest blockchain protocol ecosystems in the space, from Blockchain protocols to dApps building ton top of them : to name a few of them, Casper Labs, ( we're very close with Medha the CTO) Polygon/matic, Digibyte ( we're very close with Rudy, the vicechairman), TomoChain, Neo, Dash, Presearch, Skale Labs, Harmony , and many more

great question, the name ThreeFold was chosen by our founder as our infrastructure provides the three main layers of a full blown cloud, in terms of security: we have designed probably one of the most secured and private cloud infrastucure, and the magic comes from our in-house OS ( operating system) - the ZeroOS, that makes every piece of hardware totally stateless, wit focus on data and workload privacy . Our type of smart contract is different than the rest, as we built a smart-contract for IT that is native to our protocol

The major problem preventing global internet acess is that no project wants to build data centers in remote locations probably due to security and lack of reliable sufficient power resources . How will ThreeFold be able to overcome these challenges and do you think the ThreeFold Grid will be able to provide internet capacity in remote locations?

Very true - none of the market leader have built datacenter in remote locations becasue it is difficult. We have taken the approaoch to built the technogy from the ground up - stepping over many of the problems in traditional stacks. For exmaple, no login possible to devices, the devices "learn" from a blockchain what they needs to be doing. The blockchain contains all information about all workloads for every device which means a 100% accurate history of what needs to run (or be stored) anywhere. No people are required to start, stop, maintain or do anything operationaly. That's how you can built an autonomous, secure and performing system. Last by no least - we do exist in DC's but prefer to exist in schools, universities, telephone masts, city halls, malls, everyhwere but a DC.

The fact that $TFT has a max supply of 4B worries me alot, in the event that the 4B max supply is reach, won't the token become useless or how do you intend to drive value to the TFT token so that investors don't just hold a worthless token in the long-term?

at the moment, there is only a supply of about 800m TFT, and only few of them are actually tradable. https://wiki.threefold.io/#/threefold__token_overview With increasing demand for deployments on the ThreeFold Grid, the demand for TFT will increase. A large part of the payments for this capacity will be burnt, and at a certain ratio of utilization, the overall supply will increase. So the situation for TFT will be deflational in the end.

Yes, TFT is used to pay for the utilization of capacity for the ThreeFold Grid. A large part of that payment gets burned, leading to increased scarcity of TFT over time.

✅ Why do you think Zero OS is really the right OS to build the internet accessible to all? Also it is not as well known as others, can't this be a major barrier to entry by not having enough developers?

Zero-OS is out take on building a secure OS. No logins, (physical and network) no way to enrter the OS - all activity is outboud (prvisioning watcher reading what it needs to do in an operational blockchain). The kernel itself is Linux, we use a Linux kernerl because it supports most hardware peripheals and runs almost any application. No need to reinvent that, it's just everything around the kernel which has been hardened.

How easy is it to create a virtual data center on top of ThreeFold Grid? Would TFT be compulsory? If you don't mind walking us through the procedure or steps to follow?

Very easy. You can carve you own virtual private DC based in a private netwotk out of the mesh. We have a digital system administrator that is your single tenant provisioning platform (3bot) which has secure access (priv / pub key pair and 2FA authentication through phone app). from this secure launch platform you can "reserver" capacity on any of the 3nodes (boxes) out there and connect them together with private, encrypted secure networking IPv4/6. You can create ingress and egress points to your network where you want / open to the internet os secured by VPN

Security, scalability and data security are three very important aspects at the enterprise level, how does the Your project handle these issues?

Maximilian Rang

The level of security and data security for deployments on the ThreeFold grid is much higher then on regular cloud capacity. Our operating system ZeroOS doesnt allow for mouse or keyboard input, so the host as no access to the data. Plus its stored only in fractions, so an attacker would need to be in multiple locations at once, with the decryption key and still have to find his way into the hardware. The ThreeFold Grid is built to scale into infinity, as long as there is enough demand.

How is the maintenance of the ThreeFold Grid done and who is responsible for this? Since the grid has over 600 servers and over 16,000 CPU cores worldwide, how cost effective do you think it will be for the team to maintain the Threefold Grid?

Weynand Kuijpers

Maintenance (hardware) is the onwers obligation. Owners might have as little as one node (any piece of hardware will do) which make mainteance the same as for you laptop. Other might have a bigger setup and they ususally know what do to (like DC's). For software - we have made it autonomous and stateless. None of the software (OS included) is installed on local disks - everything is loadred (in a smart and efficient) way at boot time (protected by has checking to make it safe to man in the middle attacks). So - as much as we can get it people maintenance free.

great question, we're working with many NFT projects at the moment to help them store their NFTs, and most importantly, to enable their users to store their NFTs in a decentralized storage environment, very resilient to any kind of outages. Making it the perfect way to store NFTs. ( same thing with that IPFS is doing) but we do it in a better way

so there is not going to be one platform, but multiple platforms all connected from different layers. ThreeFold is literally the lowest layer in the IT stack, anything can be built on top of us, and anything can be connected to our capacity. That is the beauty of our architecture

The problem with NFTs is that the digital asset (like image or video) that is the actual art or collectible is stored on regular capacity from big cloud providers. If it gets taken offline, the NFT is useless. That is not decentralized at all. If you store those digital assets on the ThreeFold Grid, they are decentralized, secure and no one can delete them!!!

On the topic of privacy, how does the platform protect teams/individuals from bad actors? For example, hackers looking to exploit algorithm design

Weynand Kuijpers

The platform works with digital representation if you as an individual. For creating reservations and launching applications you have to find consensus with the "other" digital representars for the farmer (=miner of capacity) and the application creator. These avatars will agree and send money (TFT's) back and forth. After consensus the agreee setup is committed to a BC.

Not done yest but coming is a reputation system where bad actions (called out by others) will damage you reputation of our avatar (as it does in real life) and this will keep most of the bad actors out. We cannot guarantee that there will be no bad actors on this grid - just like you will find importerers in the internet today. However we feel we can make it more transparant and a choice from individuals to do checks.

great question! we are product people more than just shillers we have spent years building and focusing on the core tech before trying to hype things out. We're doing very organically, we're positioned as the largest decentralized cloud in the world, literally, and investors can make their own mind if they want to join our mission. but most importantly, we're working on expanding our network to the edges, and powering as many apps/dApps as possible

there is a DIY farming, you can use any hardware that has a CPU and memory on it, and you can connect it to our grid ( even a raspberry Pi can do it)

Our team is largely decentralized and so far, we only had a couple of cases of Covid. So very little impact. Regarding competition, the ThreeFold Grid is definitely bigger then Akash or Internet Computer when it comes to capacity. Also, the ThreeFold Grid enables deployments via Kubernetes and Docker, something that is not possible for comparable projects. 95% of the current internet is already built with Kubernetes, so migration is really easy. No need to learn and code in a new language from scratch.

If you mean developer tools, yes, we have an SDK (see our repo's and look for js-sdk) and we;re working on our own programming language to make this all possible (vlang, see v/vlang repo on github).

As ThreeFold does not have a smart contract, there is no audit at this point. Our founder is coming from 5 exits and 25 years of experience in cloud. If we wanted to just make money, we would just provide another cloud solution instead of a complicated rug pull that would ruin our reputation. But we are not in for the money, we want to enable a new Internet where we all get our digital lives back and break free from data-driven restrictions and hypnosis.

We not network. We are the other 50% of the internet. The compute and storage part. We are looking forward to have starlink as a partner.

🥇 In what way do you guarantee the good behavior of all the farmers? What if one of them decides to engage in shady practices? Do you have a way to detect and sanction him?

Maximilian Rang

It is hard for a farmer to be a bad actor. The operating system on 3nodes, ZeroOS does not respond to mouse or keyboard. Even if he could get to the data and somehow could decrypt it, it would be unreadable without the other parts of the deployment that is in other locations. So all a farmer could do is take his 3node off the grid. That means he does not earn TFT anymore. Sourvereign (within a city or country), secure. Reliability not by copying data but by describing it and storing fractions everywhere. Not today, but in the not so distant future. So think of it as follow: once you have established an online representation of yorself, and many others have as well, then sending messages from one such online presence to another (email or whatsapp / telegram) is not so difficult. Same for building a social network or video conference. So your online avatar will connect to others and there will be no 3rd party in the middle anymore. Not us, not anyone else. Hence the statement one app (browser) to the avatar will do it all.

How expensive is the internet that ThreeFold is building with respect to current internet networks? Have they done calculations of this data? How much energy could be saved?

As we have less layers (efficieent) no commercials licensing and no needs for people to maintain the costs will be less than a third of what Amazon / Google charges. But, bear in mind this is not the play we want to to. There will be a race to the bottom and the big guys can afford a lot. It's more about being in charge of you own data and not relying on those giants.
