I will go first then. My name is Yemu Xu and I am the cofounder & CGO at ARPA. At ARPA I’m in charge of the overall BD, PR, marketing and growth. Prior to cofounding ARPA I was the Head of Growth at Boro, a Money 20/20 fintech startup that raised over $10mil. Before that, I worked as an actuarial consultant at Fidelity Investments in Chicago. I am also a entrepreneur-in-residence at ZhenFund, one of China’s most prominent VCs.

My name is Felix Xu, Cofounder & CEO of ARPA.I graduated with Finance, Information Systems majors @ New York University, a college known for its CS and AI research. For the past 6 years I have been working on venture capital investment in Fintech, big data and AI startups. Most recently I led blockchain sector research and early stage investment at Fosun Group, one of the largest conglomerates in China. To give some examples I invested Suishou Technology, Datebao Insurance, Huike Group in China and MakeMyTrip (NYSE: MMYT) in India.

I came into blockchain space since 2016 working with enterprise blockchains (non-crypto) and bought my 1st bitcoin in mid 2017. Still Hodling. At ARPA, we also helps China for setting national standard on multiparty computation, a core tech of ARPA.

Can you briefly describe what is ARPA in 3-5 sentences? What technology stands behind ARPA and why it’s better than the existing one?

Sure we had a longer version but I guess I will follow the rules

APRA is a layer 2 solution on blockchain, the goal of ARPA is to separate data utility from ownership, and enable data renting. We use what’s called multiparty computation (MPC). ARPA’s MPC protocol creates ways for multiple entities to collaboratively analyze data and extract data synergies, while keeping each party’s data input private and secure.

As for why it’s better than the existing one? Because prior to us it was an unsolvable issue…

Because you know for data, one you see it, you have it. You can do whatever you want with it. There was no way to seperate ownership and utility.

MPC is an unprecendented way to seperate these two. For the first time in history, we see hope for data to flow freely and securely.

What are the major milestones you have achieved so far?

1) Team forming: we built our core team in March to June 2018, we literally spoke to everyone within my network about the vision of data renting. Our cofounder Derek has several years of experience in AI, and Alex who earned a PhD in Cryptography from Tsinghua University (best in China) offered several route for privacy-preserving computation technology. Alex’s PhD research was in MPC and FHE algorithms. I came onboard in charge of user growth and BD, and Jiang joined from Google Cloud.

2) Advisors and professors: we contacted some of the most renowned professors in MPC, Ivan Damgard, Nigel Smart, Yehuda Lindell and others. Two of their research fellows Mark and Dragos joined us. ARPA is at the forefront of turning MPC paper and concepts into production.

3) Development: in Feb 2019 we delivered a testnet 2 months ahead of the schedule to showcase what MPC is capable of. The current version of ARPA MPC Network supports auto deployment of computation nodes and auto task distribution. Users can write computation logic with the script language developed by ARPA. The language supports most of the common computation types, including but not limited to arithmetic computation of integer, fixed and floating point numbers, comparison, square root, exponentiation, and various kinds of matrix computation.

4) Mainnet: we are on track to deliver mainnet by year end, which enables execution of MPC tasks and earn rewards

5)Exchanges and communities.  After one and half year’s progress and growth, ARPA now as a huge and lively community with more than 70,000 supporters speaking 8 different languages including Indian, Chinese, Korean, Vietnamese, Filipino, Thai, Russian, Indonesian, among many others. We will initially focus on China, Korea, Southeast Asia, Russia and India. These markets are vivid and much more open-minded to crypto and blockchain than the rest of the world. We will do events like meetups, hackathons, conferences, among many others. Currently we are on Huobi, Gate.io, MXC, KuCoin, BinanceDEX, and hopefully Binance tmrw. 

6) Partnerships. Since the inception of ARPA, we have been relentlessly delivering secure computation solution to some of the largest companies in the world, including JD.com, Sinochem and Fosun Group.  

Business partners are one of the most important assets ARPA has. ARPA’s protocol integrated with Alibaba Cloud blockchain-as-a-service. We landed a contract with JD.com’s fintech division, Chinese 2nd largest e-commerce company with 45bn USD market cap, to support secure risk model analysis between JD and its financial institution clients. The list goes on for nearly 20 leading international corporations. Ongoing applications include 1) Joint anti-fraud solution and black list sharing, 2) Smart insurance pricing, 3) Secure risk analytics for financial institutions.

On the research side, we are working along with Alibaba, Baidu, Ant Financial to assist the China Academy of Information and Communication Technology (CAICT) to set the national standard of MPC. Recently China’s President Xi publicly expressed support for blockchain industry. We also in the process of joining IEEE work group for multiparty computation and federated machine learning.

Blockchain is a set of trustless nodes together to maintain a ledger. MPC is a set of trustless nodes together to analyze on private data. Both MPC and blockchain are decentralized. 

The fair disclosure mechanism corresponding to blockchain technology combined with our secure multi-party computation can revolutionize the traditional way of data privacy protection.

A lot of projects try to build data exchange or marketplace and use blockchain to track data flow. However this doesn’t really solve data leakage problem as once I can see the raw data, I can copy and share it elsewhere. Therefore only privacy-preserving computation can ensure the separation of data ownership and data utility.

Q1. What are the  main reasons that  the community should vote for Arpa? What is your advantages againts Carry?

Crypto industry is still at its infancy. So there is more collaboration than competition. We respect Carry and they seem to be doing interesting stuff in Korea. Unfortunately only one goes to Binance. Here I share my view on ARPA vs Carry. 

1)Our mainnet launching soon. After our mainnet launch we will have big bounty programs “bootstrapping reward” to incentivize computation power providers. We will host hackathons worldwide to scotch the best coders and developers. 

2)ARPA serves as an infrastructure for secure data sharing, and aims to create massive data synergies for multiple industries. In long term we target individual data management and secure monetization, but we start with enterprises who are more in need of this tech. 

3) In terms of competitors, ARPA is on the cutting-edge of MPC research, the most promising privacy-preserving data tech known in cryptography. We have very few competitors and already delivered testnet to showcase what MPC is capable of (testnet.arpachain.io).

4) ARPA is very international. Our team members speak 6 different languages we all have highly international background. Currently, we have over 70,000 supporters in our communities comprised of Chinese, English, Vietnamese, Korean, Russian, Thai, Indonesian and Filipino speakers. Soon we will expand to other countries for both business development and community building.

5) China is one of the largest markets for crypto and blockchains. China’s president Xi has announced a national-level, unprecedented support for blockchain technology and has set this as a national strategy. This is a historic opportunity not only for us, but also for our investors for sure

6) TOKEN BURN! We consistently buy back from the market and burn ARPA tokens with revenue from privacy-preserving data sharing solution for enterprise. In future we expect more people to use ARPA onchain for privacy preserving tasks and we will take a cut to burn token, something like a transaction fee for exchange. The circulation $$ for ARPA is much smaller than Carry, so given larger liquidity on Binance, price performance should be better for ARPA.

7) We focus on BD, tech and community. Nothing should be left behind. We always exceed our community’s expectations.

Brief explanation of MPC

Secure multiparty computation (MPC) is a set of cryptography technologies with the goal of creating methods for parties to jointly compute a function over their inputs while keeping those inputs private.

Informally, MPC enables multiple trustless parties A, B, C, … to jointly compute a function with the participants’ secret value without learning more information than what the result reveals.

 

A classical example of 2-party computation is the Millionaires’ Problem: two millionaires want to know who is richer with the absence of a trusted third party, in such a way that neither of them learns the net worth of the other. A solution to this situation is essentially to securely evaluate the comparison function. More generally, MPC allows n party (n >= 2) to jointly compute some information while preserving privacy for secret data.

MPC technology can empower the real world use case of privacy-preserving computation. There has been active work from the research community since the 1980s when the 2-party computation was first introduced. However, there has not been any easy available MPC service for the general public. Thus leading to a very high bar to try out this technology.

The main entry point for ARPA is enterprise-level private data sharing and there are now many similar projects on the market, such as GXC. How is ARPA different in this regard? What are the business partnerships?

Currently there are very few players in the secure and privacy-preserving computation field. The current competitors include PlatOn, Enigma, Oasis labs. Platon currently only supports private computation between the 2 parties, while we support multiple parties and are a lot faster. 

Enigma and Oasis labs and GXC are using solutions based on secure hardware (TEE).  However, the problems in TEE based solutions are 1) the trust is delegated to the hardware providers, meaning one has to trust Intel, AMD or ARM etc., 2) TEE has been reported to have security holes,  3) the correctness of computation is not verifiable.

Quote from Prof Yehuda Lindell, a renowned professor and computer scientist at Bar-Ilan University – “There have been some claims that hardware solutions are more secure, and relying on “the latest MPC paper would be a bit irresponsible”. We argue that hardware is actually a single point of failure, and suffers from the same software ailments as the rest of the industry.”

MPC is more decentralized than TEE. You have to trust TEE manufacturer which is Intel…

I will answer the first one, why should you buy ARPA tokens? 

In short, ARPA token is an essential part in ever-growing ARPA ecosystem. Its supply also decreases due to buyback and burns by ARPA foundation. 

Computation Cost and Rewards: All participants in MPC computation are compensated with ARPA tokens for their contribution of computing power. The computation power consumed are mainly measured by the amount of triples consumed in one instance of computation. Upon mainnet release, people can run MPC node and earn ARPA rewards on tasks sent by other users. The network also allocated 600 million ARPA tokens as bootstrapping reward to incentivize early adopters. 

Data and Model Usage Fee: To encourage the data providers to list high quality data resources on ARPA network, each MPC computation will be charged for data usage fee to compensate the data provider. Person data wallet is one application that can be enabled by ARPA, where individual can connect accounts and earn tokens whenever other “rent” their data for analysis or building models.

Security Deposit for computation nodes: MPC participants will use ARPA token as a form of safety deposit for launching and fulfilling computation jobs. Abortion during computation and other malicious actions result in loss of stake. This is to ensure fairness for all parties and limit the misuse of ARPA by bad actors. 

Staking reward for staking nodes: ⅓ of all bootstrapping reward goes to staking nodes. 

Community Governance: Token holders above a specific threshold can have the right to vote for future accepted payment tokens and other proposals. The token holder are also able to participate in the arbitration of failed MPC computations and take part of the cheaters deposit. 

In addition, we also developed various incentive programs to increase the token usage. There was an exchange called Forber that treated ARPA token as their native token. Holders of ARPA token are able to buy 25%-50% off BTCs… 

The past three months alone 30mil ARPA token was bought back and burnt, this will continue. There will be fewer and fewer ARPA tokens.

But i have a question in this regard. Blockchain is open to all. Bad guys are not an exception. What if a network participant decides to gain access to the output of a calculation unfairly, or completely interrupt the calculation? How is ARPA is protected from this?

Short answer is yes, ARPA can definitely help in treating diseases? 

How? 

Through ARPA privacy-preserving computatoin network, hospitals and research institutions can “Pool“ patient’s data and info together WITHOUT leaking or exposing these data or info. That way a whole picture of a certain patient or disease can be formed that researchers and doctors can take better measures on it

A: I explained abou multiparty computation. You want to have privacy-preserving computation feature at an acceptable speed. Single-party encrypted computation is called Fully Homomorphic Encrypted (FHE), and FHE is 5000-10000 times slower than MPC

The lightbulb moment comes when we saw DARPA, The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, which is an agency of the United States Department of Defense responsible for the development of emerging technologies for use by the military.

The name ARPA is a tribute to ARPANET, the world’s first internet. Internet was built originally as a decentralized network but nowadays it is all centralized and controlled by Internet giants like Google, Facebook etc. especially on people’s data. 

We build ARPA as a new paradigm of data sharing. The goal of Project ARPA is to separate data ownership and usage, or data renting. We are creating ways for multiple entities (enterprises or individuals) to collaboratively compute data, run big data analysis, while keeping each party’s data private and secure. ARPA’s cryptographic Multi-party Computation (MPC) protocol has obvious applications across industries, including fintech, insurance, advertising, artificial intelligence, healthcare, and more.

A: Great great question. At the beginning we ask data provider to be part of the computation to make sure all other computation nodes dont collude and get the raw data. Our protocol is malicious adversary meaning only 1 honest party can ensure data privacy. For abort attack in future we will build a reputation system to ban those with high % abort. 

You are right on medical research side. MPC can be used for diagnosis among multiple hospitals, even to build models in privacy-preserving way. However the efficieny is still low under malicious adversary trust setting. We tested for logistic regression and CNNs, but CNN is too slow

As for why we are a good candidate for Binance.. 

Binance is really the holy grail for any project, so again its really our honor and pleasure to be chose as a candidate for the 2nd rounf of voting. 

We got in touch with binance in July 2018, a couple months since ARPA’s inception. Binance found out that we are working on Multiparty Computation and threshold signature for crypto wallet key management system, and they are looking into this tech. 

Our team spoke to CZ and his CTO on threshold signature directly which is a core tech of us. We kept this conversation going for the past year and showed our progress lasting thru the crypto winter. 

In July we got listed on Binance DEX as one of the first batch of projects. We look forward to more collaboration with Binance. 

Also, both ARPA and Binance are highly international. Only the projects that are truly global can survive and thrive, and go further.

It is essential to distinguish blockchain and crypto.

Blockchain gives birth to crypto, and crypto is one of the major applications of blockchain.

Crypto breaks the boundaries of borderlines to a large extent. One can send money home in btc or stable coin in seconds any time of the day, with very little fee. 

Crypto space is highly diverse and international, full of smart and interesting ppl from different walks of life and cultural backgrounds. They are audacious, brave and all curious. It excites me to move forward and make this world a better place with all these trail-blazers.

Many view blockchain as part of web 3.0, which is another wave of revolution, which increases the efficiency of value flow. It is being supported by more and more governments and nations, China being one of them, which brings tons of opportunities and endless possibilities  in the future. That really excites me.

A: It is not a contrast. The privacy im talking about is data privacy, and data renting as opposed to data selling protects privacy and earn money for data source. 

For example you can run different analysis on multiple data source combined and only get the output. All input is kept in secret. That is data renting. You extract the value but can’t see the raw data.

How exactly does your solution implement credit fraud protection?  Are there any way to protect against quantum computers that could be dangerous for cryptography in the near future?

I will give an example

Credit anti-fraud is the biggest challenge of the global banking industry as default is costing billions for financial institutions. Many are implementing smart credit analysis from multiple data sources such as credit bureau, e-commerce websites, social media etc.. In light of stricter privacy laws, these raw data points are harder to acquire, and siloed data from each financial institution hinders comprehensive risk management.

ARPA utilizes MPC and  blockchain technology to enable secure data collaboration between financial institutions and data sources, or even among their peers. For example, each bank has its own proprietary data and blacklist. Using ARPA’s secure data sharing solution, banks can perform searches on encrypted blacklist, or run analysis on encrypted prop data across the whole bank alliance. During the process, neither the secret input (borrower’s name) nor the raw data from any bank is disclosed. All data is kept safe with multiparty computation and all transactions are stored permanently on blockchain. In short, ARPA help financial institutions build a comprehensive risk profile for borrower.

We can replace components of MPC into post quantum algorithms, it doesnt affect ARPA

A: A lot of scammers and projects with no use cases. People issue tokens for no purpose. 

ARPA tries to solve the biggest dilemma in data industry – how can I both protect my privacy and monetize my data.

I have some closing comments. First of all, an enterprise must be truly global and international to achieve long-term success in crypto and blockchain space. Our team members speak 6 different languages we all have highly international background. Currently, we have over 70,000 supporters in our communities comprised of Chinese, English, Vietnamese, Korean, Russian, Thai, Indonesian and Filipino speakers.

ARPA is quite unique in technology and we are at the cutting-edge of turning paper concept into production. I do believe blockchain space is about breakthrough in tech and enable new use cases in decentralized setting. We have a good business model, hardworking and open-minded team, and we are very strong in both biz dev and research and engineering. We have achieved so much with a 10 people team and we will keep doing more and exceed everyone’s expectations. Being in China, we are at a historic crossroads, facing great opportunity ahead.
