Hello, everyone!๐Ÿ˜

We are glad to meet hereย

Moshe Malawach, CEO of Aleph.im (@Jonnyjonnyjon)

Moshe Malawach CEO of Aleph.im

Hello everyone! Happy to be here!

I am Jonathan Schemoul, alias Moshe Malawach, founder of the aleph.im project.

CryptoDiffer team

Let`s start with introduction questions

Q1: Can you introduce yourself to the community? What is your background and how did you join Aleph.im?

Moshe Malawach CEO of Aleph.im

Before aleph.im I was a freelance developer and electronic engineer, designing software for big banks, hardware for startups.

While starting to work on blockchain applications I realized there was a missing link, a missing part of the ecosystem: an infrastructure layer between the user and the blockchains, that would be decentralized and allowing to build way bigger dApps: aleph.im was born.

Q2: Can you briefly describe what is Aleph.im in 3-5 sentences?ย  What technology stands behind Aleph.im and why itโ€™s better than the existing one?

Moshe Malawach CEO of Aleph.im

aleph.im is a decentralized cloud storage, database and computing platform, that is compatible with multiple blockchains and speaks their languages. I has its own network (built on top of technologies like GossipSub used by Ethereum 2.0 for example too), data storage and replication protocol (that can be compatible with IPFS if needed).

It aims to be the infrastructure layer of the DeFI (decentralized finance) ecosystem: Many DeFI projects are adding off-chain features, and need decentralization for it.

aleph.im provides a safe and secure database where messages are signed, verified and commited on chain regularly.

We will also offer a decentralized identity system for the DeFI ecosystem.

I think that we are offering a quite complete service offering for decentralized finance networks and applications, and I don’t know any other project offering this.

CryptoDiffer team

Sounds great!

Q3: What are the major milestones you have achieved so far?

Moshe Malawach CEO of Aleph.im

We:

– have a live network
– are connected to NULS, Ethereum, Neo and Binance Chain (with more coming)
– have a few dApps in beta (my-beta.aleph.im to test our personal storage dApp!)
– and partners working and building on the aleph.im technology and network

On this (and it’s an important milestone!) we are in the proof of concept phase of our decentralized identity protocol done in collaboration with Ledger that you all know and synaps.io who works with a lot of crypto ecosystem members like Bitfinex, Polkadot, Oasis Labs, Kava, Elrond…

CryptoDiffer team

Ok, thanks for such detailed and interesting answers!

Let’s move to the Telegram community questions part.

Cryptodiffer Community

There are several existing projects such as DLT, IPFS or Swarm which all offer very similar solution to what Aleph wants to offer. However, non of these Blockchain-related projects is able to scale to the levels needed for large applications (social networks, web apps, IoT providers, etc) we use on a regular basis. Could you please enlighten us more on how Aleph intends to find a lasting solution to this issue that has been existing for years with it technology?

Moshe Malawach CEO of Aleph.im

That’s a good question, issue isn’t file storage, but database. And find how to separate data between nodes, so that you can find the data where it is wen you need it. We developed our protocol for this, and provide a decentralized database thanks to libp2p, gossipsub and others.

Cryptodiffer Community

Adoption is one of the important factor that all sustainable blockchain projects should focus to be more attractive in the investorsโ€™ eyes. What AlephIM has done and plans to do to achieve real world adoption?

Moshe Malawach CEO of Aleph.im

The decentralized identity framework is an important milestone. When a lot of users will be using aleph.im without even knowing it, that’s when adoption comes ๐Ÿ™‚ and it’s our goal

Cryptodiffer Community

1 Do you plan to add more Chains in the future for cross-chain Development ?

2 Where is the data actually stored? If one of the layer 1 chains goes down, is the data partially lost or partially unsigned?

Moshe Malawach CEO of Aleph.im

1. Yes,ย  a lot more, including Celo, Tezos, Cosmos (and cosmos sdk-based chains), Polkadot (and substrate-based chains) and many more

2. on the aleph.im nodes, if a node goes down the data is replicated from other nodes that have it to gain a good amount of active nodes again

Cryptodiffer Community

What are the main characteristics of Aleph?

Marketing and awareness are one of the most important factors in any project! And so, What is Aleph’s Markeing plan to increase people’s visibility and attract new users?

Moshe Malawach CEO of Aleph.im

To be entirely honest, adoption is the best of marketing. So I prefer to focus on that ๐Ÿ™‚

Cryptodiffer Community

The Token $ALEPH is in 3 chains at the same time, how is the distribution of the tokens in these chains? 33.33% in each one? Do you have any preference?

Can I run a node with Alephim? What requirements would you need to meet? What benefits does it offer?

Moshe Malawach CEO of Aleph.im

There is 1B tokens on each chain, but tokens of the others chains are locked on each one. There is 1B total ALEPH tokens. We used this system to avoid having minting functions on smart contracts that would have opened an infinite supply loop-hole.

Cryptodiffer Community

Considering that existing decentralized applications are unreliable and slow, how does Aleph aim to build a more reliable ecosystem? How will single cross technologies make a difference in cross-chain solution?

Can the confirmation times on the blockchain be extended for maximum security when “Aleph.im” messages are processed by the network? What are the factors affecting approval times?

Moshe Malawach CEO of Aleph.im

It’s a good question. Confirmation time is critical for some functions (like currency transfers).ย  For those you will likely wait for a network on chain confirmation. For others you can rely on the 50ms data addition treshold.

Cryptodiffer Community

The price of the ALEPH token has been rising and bringing profits to investors. What are the major utilities of the token that should make investors hold the token for the long run?

Moshe Malawach CEO of Aleph.im

Here is a few uses of the ALEPH tokens (and also running aleph.im nodes in the future too, getting those rewards :)):

Cryptodiffer Community

How do you intend to make developers build on AlephIM and encourage them to switch to AlephIM over other projects?

Moshe Malawach CEO of Aleph.im

Simplicity of use. Just add a library and start using it with your current addresses, no need for new things.

Cryptodiffer Community

What advantages does Aleph have over Sia as they both offer file storage.

Moshe Malawach CEO of Aleph.im

aleph.im isn’t only a file storage, and over all, offers service to users of all blockchains, so you can use it for your Ethereum or Neo dApp directly for example ๐Ÿ™‚

Cryptodiffer Community

Could you explain to me how AlephIM works in terms of information storage? If I want to store X information, because it is a decentralized service, it means that it will be “going around” on different nodes. Would my information be secure that way?

Moshe Malawach CEO of Aleph.im

Your information will be secure if it is encrypted, and the SDK/API provides native functions to encrypt the data. Moreover, the more nodes have your data the less risk of losing it exists, and that’s how it works inside a single channel.

Cryptodiffer Community

DeFi is one of the hottest topics in the blockchain field. Can you share your views on DeFi with us? Do you think DeFi will destroy the existing financial system?

Moshe Malawach CEO of Aleph.im

I don’t know if it will destroy it, but it will realign a lot of incentives and markets, which can be only good for the people in my opinion. That is, if done well, and it’s our duty to ensure this.

Cryptodiffer Community

How can a dApp handle multiple providers for a decentralized data source? Can this cause the system to tire up and errors occur?

How are “Aleph.im” messages signed using any of the chain addresses verified on the network?

Moshe Malawach CEO of Aleph.im

A dApp can request multiple providers and compare data, it’s up to the data consumer to have a correct verification procedure in place. Most of the time, if 90% of sources agree, you can rely on the data. With core channel nodes coming in the future, bas actors can get “slashed”.

as for verification, each chain has its own message signing and verification system, we verify that the message really comes from the address that signed it

Cryptodiffer Community

It seems that ALEPH shares a trait with ETH: it has no maximum supply. How can unlimited inflation benefit/harm ALEPH in the long term?

Moshe Malawach CEO of Aleph.im

Part of the use of the system fees will be burned, so with a lot of use, it can counterbalance inflation related to core channel (that deals with currency of the network and data incentive verification) incentive

Cryptodiffer Community

What is the advantage today of being able to be connected to different networks such as NULS, Ethereum, Binancechain, etc?

Moshe Malawach CEO of Aleph.im

Allow users of any chain to use the network, allow dApps of any chain to use it too ๐Ÿ™‚

Cryptodiffer Community

Do you considered use Aleph as 2 layer like Lighting or Plasma? This can be a choice?

Which kinds of Virtual machine can Aleph handle?ย  also can do the same with WASM?

Moshe Malawach CEO of Aleph.im

1. it’s not the goal, we are focused on data and cross-chain interoperability

2. we are working on Docker-based containers (with state machines) and WASM ones

Cryptodiffer Community

Q1. The extension of your website is . im, most crypto projects have . io, what is the meaning of that extension and why is it different?

Q2. Aleph is the first cloud-native blockchain, how makes it my experience as user of the cloud or the Dapps related different than with similar non blockchain natives? In the other hand, what would be the features in the use case of a developer?

Moshe Malawach CEO of Aleph.im

1. The project functions as a huge decentralized instant messaging system, where nodes subscribe to channels they feel interesting to them (or are paid to join!). So the .im is for instant messaging

2. It’s not a blockchain but a decentralized network that allows you to treat it as you would a serverless cloud (think of a decentralized firebase!)

Cryptodiffer Community

Why do we need scalabiity, we have tons of blockchains, but looks like there is no or little being used?

Moshe Malawach CEO of Aleph.im

Because you need scalability before being able to build things that you know will take a lot of usage. Also, look at DeFI, isn’t there a lot of use there already?

Cryptodiffer Community

After the Covid-19, many projects were affected. What strategies did Aleph have to control the negative impact of Covid-19?

Moshe Malawach CEO of Aleph.im

We are a fully distributed team, accross the world, and we can all work from home, so it wasn’t a big issue

Cryptodiffer Community

Is your aim, to become the number one (leader) in the platform decentralized cloud storage? and if so what will you say is your biggest strength to achieve it?

Moshe Malawach CEO of Aleph.im

Not necessarily. But to become the main infrastructure for the DeFI ecosystem, we do. And as I said earlier I feel like we have a very complete service offering for this. Global decentralized storage could follow.

Cryptodiffer Community

Can you explain more about your relationship with NULS? I’m aware that NULS hodlers can get Aleph tokens by locking part of their NULS token, how do we go about it?

Moshe Malawach CEO of Aleph.im

I was one of the founder of the CCC at NULS (equivalent of city of zion), so there comes the ties with it. As for this, you need to stake NULS tokens in our nodes (using pocm.nuls.io) to get ALEPH tokens there. This part might change a little bit with tokenomics overhaul this week.

Cryptodiffer Community

How best could a Decentralized Exchange be built on top of ALEPH?

Moshe Malawach CEO of Aleph.im

You could using the virtual machines once they are available

Moshe Malawach CEO of Aleph.im

Thank you everyone for your questions!

Please join @alephim if you have more in the future ๐Ÿ™‚
